William Faulkner Is Viewed By Many As Americas Greatest Writer Of Pros
William Faulkner is viewed by many as America's greatest writer of prose fiction. He was born in New Albany, Mississippi, where he lived a life filled with good times as well as bad. However, despite bad times he would become known as a poet, a short story writer, and finally one of the greatest contemporary novelists of his time. William Faulkner's accomplishments resulted not only from his love and devotion to writing, but also from family, friends, and certain uncontrollable events. William Faulkner's life is an astonishing accomplishment; however, it is crucial to explore his life prior to his fixated writing career (Mack 1794-1798). In 1905, Faulkner entered the first grade at the tender age of eight, and immediately showed signs of talent. He not only drew an explicitly detailed drawing of a locomotive, but he soon became an honor-roll student. Throughout his early education, he would work conscientiously at reading, spelling, writing, and arithmetic. However, he especially enj oyed drawing. When Faulkner got promoted to the third grade, skipping the second grade, he was asked by his teacher what he wanted to be when he grew up. He replied, "I want to be a writer just like my great granddaddy"(Minter 18). Faulkner took interest in poetry around 1910, but no one in Oxford, Mississippi, could tell him hat to do with his poems. Faulkner, who was very talkative, would always entertain Estelle Oldham by telling her vividly imaginary stories. Eventually, Faulkner grew very fond of Estelle. She became the sole inspirer and recipient of Faulkner's earlier poems. Not long after Faulkner began seeing Estelle regularly, he met a man named Phil Stone who was dating one of Estelle's friends, Katrina. Katrina had told Stone about Faulkner and his poetry. So one afternoon, Stone went to Faulkner's house to get to know him better, and during his visit he received several written verses from Faulkner's poetry. Stone not only became a very close friend of Faulkner's, but al so a mentor to the young writer at the beginning of his career. Stone immediately gave the potential poet encouragement, advice, and models for his study of literature (Minter 29). As Faulkner grew older he began to lose interest in his schoolwork and turned his attention to athletics, such as football and baseball, which caused his grades to start to fall. Eventually, he quit both athletics and school altogether. In 1919, his first literary work was acknowledged and published. The poem is a forty-line verse with a French title that acknowledges the influence of the French Symbolists. "From Mallarme he took the title of his first published poem; from Verlaine's 'Le Faune' he took the central device of The Marble Faun"(Minter 36). "The Marble Faun brings Pastoral art and modern aestheticism into a conjunction that not only exposes the weaknesses of pastoral poetry, particularly its artificiality, but also establishes the pertinence of those weaknesses to our understanding of modern a estheticism"(Minter 36). Faulkner enrolled at the University of Mississippi, and did not let his academic years distract him from writing more poems. The Mississippian, the student paper, published "Landing in Luck." The short story, nine pages in length were created directly from his direct experience in the Royal Air Force flight training in 1916. After awhile he began to get tired of school once again. He started cutting classes and finally stopped going. In the summer of 1921, Faulkner decided to take a trip to New York to receive some professional instruction from editors and critics, because Stone was busy with his academic studies. Faulkner stayed in New York and shared an incredibly small apartment with a man named Stark Young (Minter 35-40). During Faulkner's stay in New York, Stone became worried about him and his financial troubles. So Stone immediately went to work on behalf of his friend and became the Assistant District Attorney. "Within a few months, his restlessness had taken him back to Oxford and the most improbable job he would ever hold"(Minter 42). Stone pulled some strings and got Faulkner appointed to the job of postmaster at the university post office. Even as postmaster, Faulkner still found time to write. When Faulkner finished the typescript for Soldier's Pay, he it sent to

How to Make a Green Fire Halloween Jack-o-Lantern
How to Make a Green Fire Halloween Jack-o-Lantern One application of green fire is using it to light your Halloween jack-o-lantern. This is a super-easy effect that produces spectacular results (watch the video). Heres how you do it: Key Takeaways: Green Fire Jack-o-Lantern The green fire jack-o-lantern is a colorful flame-filled Halloween pumpkin. The project involves dissolving a salt in a flammable solvent and igniting it.The green flame comes from the emission spectrum of the chemical. Either the boron ion or the Copper II (Cu2) ion will produce a green flame. The project should only be performed by adults. While the salts used in this project are not particularly toxic, they are not safe to eat. Methanol (methyl alcohol) is toxic and should not be handled or inhaled. Green Fire Jack-o-Lantern Materials You only need a few simple materials for this project: Carved jack-o-lantern. Traditionally this would be a pumpkin, but you could use a watermelon, cantaloupe, etc.Boric acid (usually found in pharmacy or pest control section of store)Methanol (such as Heetâ⠢ fuel treatment, found in the automotive section)Aluminum foil or heat-safe container that fits inside your jack-o-lanternLong-handled lighter Boric acid is a different chemical from borax (commonly sold as the laundry boost 20 Mule Team Borax). Pure boric acid is used to make a disinfectant solution and as a powder to kill and control cockroaches and other insects in the home. Boric acid dissolves better than borax in methanol, so it produces a better green flame. However, if you cant find boric acid, you can substitute borax and still get green fire. The green flame color is used in the flame test to help identify sample chemical composition. Nayef Hajjaj / EyeEm / Getty Images Other Substitutions Switching out borax for boric acid is not the only substitution you can make. You can use copper sulfate as the salt and a different alcohol for the solvent. Good choices include rubbing alcohol (contains one or more different alcohols), ethyl alcohol (ethanol), or isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol). These alcohols are less toxic than methanol, plus they contain water. The water is important because it dissolves the copper sulfate so it can color the flame. Copper sulfate is sold as a pure chemical and also as a root killing chemical. It is available online and at some home supply stores. The container should be labeled as copper sulfate, copper sulphate, or copper sulfate pentahydrate. If you get copper sulfate, you can also use it for other projects, such as growing blue copper sulfate crystals or making a copper sulfate geode. Fun Fact: The copper ion can emit either green or blue light. Cu2 is green, while Cu is blue. Unfortunately, changing the copper oxidation state is not a simple matter. It requires a series of redox reactions that could cant easily do at home. Start the Greenà Fire! Technically all you need to do is sprinkle boric acid in a heat-safe container, add a little methanol, set the container inside the jack-o-lantern and light the fire. Its important to use a long-handled lighter, since the vapor pressure of methanol is very high and you will hear that whoof sound when you light the mixture. The best result, in my opinion, comes from lining the inside of the jack-o-lantern with aluminum foil and using the pumpkin as the heat-safe container. You can sprinkle boric acid inside the jack-o-lantern, splash a little methanol around, and light the decoration. The aluminum helps contain the liquid, plus it is reflective so it enhances the brightness of the display. Do not add more fuel to the burning fire; wait until it goes out. Safety note: dont do this indoors! Holiday Clean-Up Tips The green fire can get very hot, so there is a good chance your pumpkin will get somewhat cooked by lighting it this way. The methanol is burned away by the fire, leaving some boric acid residue with your pumpkin. While boric acid is not particularly toxic, you dont want kids or animals to eat this jack-o-lantern, nor is it ideal for compost since too much boron can be toxic to plants. Be sure to throw your jack-o-lantern away before it rots in place. Just remember the pumpkin contains boric acid, so dont let anyone eat it.

Coca-Cola Case Study Essays
Coca-Cola Case Study Essays Coca-Cola Case Study Paper Coca-Cola Case Study Paper Company Overview Coca-Cola drink was created in May 1886 by Dr. John Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1891, entrepreneur Asa G Candler gained ownership of the Coca-Cola business. Ernest Woodruff bought Coca-Cola for $25 million in 1919. Coca-Cola gradually grew and became one of the worldââ¬â¢s largest soft drinks company. Although Coca-Cola also deals with non-carbonated drinks, its primary products are carbonated drinks. PEST Analysis The PEST Analysis is an analysis to examine the macro-environment of Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s operations (Johnson, Scholes and Whittington, 2008). Political Like most companies, Coca-Cola is monitoring the policies and regulations set by the government. There are no political issues in this instance. Economic There is low growth in the market for carbonated drinks, especially in Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s main market, North America. The market growth recorded at only 1% for North America in 2004. Social There are changes in consumersââ¬â¢ lifestyles. Consumers are more health conscious. This affects the Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s sales of the carbonated drinks as consumers prefer non-carbonated drinks such as tea, juices and bottled drinks. Demand for carbonated drinks decreases and this leads to a decrease in Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s revenues. Technological Furthermore, it many are able to better withstand poor trading conditions in one particular market. If products are performing poorly in Mexican for instance, which is experiencing economic problems, this might be offset by a growth in sales in new market economies in eastern Europe such as Hungary, which consumes 153 serving f Coca-Cola per head per year. Lastly, by operating globally Coca-Cola will be able to engage in joint ventures with businesses in local markets and take advantages of their local knowledge and distribution networks. Anchor bottlers, fort example had the management and resources to match the growth targets of the economy. The principle threat for Coca-Cola arising from the globalisation of the world economy ids competition from other drinks manufacturers. It is possible that the hypercompetitive state of many global markets may create future difficulties for Coca-Cola. For example, drinks companies in the Newly Industrialised countries (NICs) may emerge in the 21st century as a threat to Coca-Cola. In addition just as Coca-Cola has benefited from a convergence of consumer tastes which have accompanied globalisation and which has resulted in consumers all over the world drinking its products, so it may suffer from a shift in global drink tastes away from cola drinks, which form the core of Coca-Colas business. Furthermore there is also evidence in the article which suggests that a global approach is not always effective. Despite producing one of the worlds most famous advertisements, it did not sell much of the product. The business changed strategy as a result away from single theme advertising, to take into account the nature into which the company is selling. Lastly, a global approach requires massive investment and expenditure. If the world economy is in recession which particularly affects the USA and other countries buying Coca-Cola products, then the business may be greatly affected. 'Students' learning and achievement increase substantially when Dissertation
'Students' learning and achievement increase substantially when teachers work in learning communities supported by school le - Dissertation Example In this assignment, I look forward to discussing how crucial collaborating with the other colleagues is in order to bring about a drastic change in the teaching and the development of the teaching resources. For a clear sense of understanding, this assignment is divided into the following sections. Firstly, Iââ¬â¢ve tried to point out the various benefits and challenges that were presented to me during the course of my collaboration with the other professionals. Secondly, Iââ¬â¢ve tried to point out how my planning abilities were strengthened by my on-going communication with these professionals, and how it helped me with my teaching. Lastly, Iââ¬â¢ve discussed how this collaboration has benefitted my students and their learning abilities. In recent years, the shift from a perception of the teachers as solely responsible for educational outcomes to the perception of education as a process that includes collaboration colleagues (teachers and support staff) and other professio nals e.g. a speech and language therapist, etc. has change the way we think about team dimension and working with our colleagues. Team-work is highly important for the success of any activity. Be it a workplace, a football field, or the members of a certain community, teamwork can bring forth amazing results. However, working together as a part of the team is not always as easy as it sounds. Although the benefits that you can derive from the successful implementation are immense, it also requires a great deal of compromise as well as hard work. (Woloch, 2008) There are several ways in which professionals today work together within schools for e.g. in middle schools across the globe teachers usually collaborate in an informal way all the time. These interactions help build up more formal modes of professional collaboration which are directed towards improving teaching and learning. These collaborations are very important for effective learning in any educational institution because t he sum of parts is better than the parts itself. (Wheelock, 2000) Many schools are encouraging teacher collaboration. For example, peer coaching (Joyce & Showers, 1988) and interdisciplinary curriculum development (Brandt, 1991) are premised on teachers' collaborative relationships, as are current trends in the design and delivery of professional development programs (Barth, 1990). Many aspects of currently recommended school reforms call for greater collaboration among teachers (Goodlad, 1984). The trend toward school-based decision making is also consonant with the recognition that collaboration is becoming an essential ingredient in successful schools. Smith and Scott (1990) have asserted that the collaborative school is easier to describe than define. In my opinion, in order to educate children successfully it is very important to clearify your role in the process of collaboration, and also respect the roles of the others. This is important in order to use our input and knowledg e for the purpose of delivering the best quality of education to the children. This is the best gift that you can give to any child: quality education. As in the immortal words of Aristotle, ââ¬ËThose who educate children well are more to be honoured than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.ââ¬â¢ Hindrances in collaboration: The two major barriers that I

Management of people and organizations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Management of people and organizations - Essay Example This report consists of an organizational structure of the Walgreen Company. The company follows rigid departmentalization, which is a centralized set-up. The departments are not expected or needed to interact with each other on a daily basis. There are times when inter department communication is necessary but they are not expected to work in collaboration for the fulfillment of their routine tasks. It consists of levels of functional setup with centralized reporting and authoritative work processes. The original structure consists of three levels of management; the CEO on the first level, CFO and Departmental heads on the second level, supervisors and managers in the third level. There is a recommendation given to re-structure the set-up. Instead of three levels, Area Managers can be located at level two who will be responsible to give directives to the departmental heads. As Walgreens is providing services at national and international platforms, it is necessary to locate Area Man ager. During this process, some authority and decision-making powers of CEO can be transferred to the Area Managers. It is bureaucratic organization with very less communication between the departmental heads. However, there can be some delegation of work within the department. Supervisors can take the role of the Line Managers in the organization. However, there is a need to define their responsibility. Managers and Departmental Heads can play an effective role in filling communication gap and provide solutions within the department.

Morality and Humanity In Kants View Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Morality and Humanity In Kants View - Essay Example Second, recast that maxim as a universal law of nature governing all rational agents, and so as holding that all must, by natural law, act as you yourself propose to act in these circumstances. Third, consider whether your maxim is even conceivable in a world governed by this law of nature. If it is, then, fourth, ask yourself whether you would, or could, rationally will to act on your maxim in such a world. If you could, then your action is morally permissible. Throughout his moral works, Kant returns time and again to the question of the method moral philosophy should employ when pursuing these aims. A basic theme of these discussions is that the fundamental philosophical issues must be addressed a priori, that is, without drawing on observations of human beings and their behavior. Once we ââ¬Å"seek out and establishâ⬠the fundamental principle of morality a priori, then we may consult facts drawn from experience in order to determine how best to apply this principle to huma n beings and generate particular conclusions about how we ought to act. Kant's insistence on an a priorimethod to seek out and establish fundamental moral principles, however, does not always appear to be matched by his own practice. The Groundwork, for instance, makes repeated appeals to empirical facts (that our wills are determined by practical principles, that various motivations are variable in producing right actions, and so on). Later ethical works rely even more heavily on empirical generalizations. Kant did not take himself to be employing these assumptions in seeking out and establishing the fundamental moral principle, only in applying it to human beings. Nevertheless, it is not always easy to tell whether Kant's arguments gain their plausibility only by relying on ideas established by observations of human being and the world they inhabit. Kant's example of a perfect duty to others concerns a promise you might consider making but have no intention of keeping in order to get needed money. Naturally, being rational requires not contradicting oneself, but there is no self-contradiction in the maxim "I will make lying promises when it achieves something I want". An immoral action clearly does not involve a self-contradiction in this sense (as would the maxim of finding a married bachelor). Kant's position is that it is irrational to perform an action if that action's maxim contradicts itself once made into a universal law of nature. The maxim of lying whenever it gets what you want generates a contradiction once you try to combine it with the universalized version that all rational agents must, by a law of nature, lie when it gets what they want. Here is one way of seeing how this might work: If I conceive of a world in which everyone by nature must try to deceive people any time it will get what they want, I am conceiving of a world in which no practice of giving one's word could ever arise. So I am conceiving of a world in which no practice of giving one's word exists. My maxim, however, is to make a deceptive promise in order to get needed money. And it is a necessary means of doing this that a practice of taking the word of others exists, so that someone might take my word and I take advantage of their doing so. Thus, in trying to conceive of my maxim in a world in which no one ever takes anyone's word in such circumstances, I am trying to conceiv

Political Participation by Latino Non-Citizens in the US Article
Political Participation by Latino Non-Citizens in the US - Article Example As the discussion highlightsà the studyââ¬â¢s resultant figure for the Latino non-citizensââ¬â¢ political participation was an insignificant 3.6%. Though this meager figure indicated less participation, the study still was able to present other rooms for interpretation of political behavior. For instance, it was found that Latino non-citizens were ââ¬Å"about one and a half times more likely to participateâ⬠in local non-political groups and may indicate a perception of non-political activities as ââ¬Å"directly relevant and â⬠¦ more funâ⬠.This paper outlines that political activities and levels of participation were divided into two types: the less demanding activities (i.e., ââ¬Å"wearing a button or displaying a sign, signing a petition orà attending a public meetingâ⬠); and the more demanding activities (i.e. ââ¬Å"volunteering forà a political campaign and donating moneyâ⬠). The trend for both citizen and non-citizen was similar: higher participation rates for less demanding activities and lower participation rates for the more demanding activities. Though the same trend appeared for both, the citizens still have a significantly, higher participation rate against the non-citizens.à The aforementioned figure of 3.6% also opened discussions for the relevance of understanding the variables behind the differences in the level of participation among the Latino non-citizens. The study delved and shed light on this through elaborating how ââ¬Å"results show that participation is not randomâ⬠.... Though the same trend appeared for both, the citizens still have a significantly, higher participation rate against the non-citizens. The aforementioned figure of 3.6% also opened discussions for the relevance of understanding the variables behind the differences in the level of participation among the Latino non-citizens. The study delved and shed light on this through elaborating how ââ¬Å"results show that participation is not randomâ⬠(Leal, 2002, p. 369). Moreover, active participation lies on at least six of these identified variables: 1) how politically-informed non-citizens were; 2) the perception on the existing differences between political parties; 3) the depth of political interest; 4) possession or lack of ââ¬Å"a strong ethnic identity;â⬠likelihood of participation for 5) the younger generation; and 6) those planning to naturalize (Leal, 2002, p. 369). The fact that the younger generation was seen as more likely to participate in political activities seemed to correct a former assumption: ââ¬Å"age is seen as a close cousin of education; people are thought to gain more information as they age and therefore, grow more likely to participateâ⬠(Leal, 2002, p. 368). The author pointed out that the proliferation by such younger participators among Latino non-citizens maybe due to the increasing anti-immigrant stance adopted by the American politics (Leal, 2002). In other words, the current political environment created a new breed of political activists among the Latino non-citizens. As long as this political environment persists, high political involvement should be expected from the young ones of the Latino immigrants. Implications Political knowledge.
