Formative Evaluation In this process, the evaluation is done on the strengths, weaknesses and even on how to improve the object. Interventions for Drug Addiction: Case Study 18893 Many attempts have been made to arrive at a universally acceptable definition of addiction and what causes addictive behaviour but the matter still remains unresolved. People often define addiction as drug abuse and misuse. To Krivak (1982,p.83), ‘Addiction will be defined as a behaviour pattern characterised by an ongoing and overwhelming preoccupation with the used of a drug and the securing of its supply.’ This definition could also say the addict is, ‘Someone who is involved with an activity to such an extent that it the major focus of his or her life’, (McAllister et all., 1991,p.5). For my assignment, I have chosen a client within the criminal justice system that has an addiction problem with drug misuse. He has been involved with the criminal justice system because of his offending behaviour relating to illegal drugs. I am basing my assignment on this client. I am going to discuss in my assignment, drug users and the criminal justice system, the psychology of addictive behaviour, Care planning and different options of planning and assessment, the initial referral and the in-depth assessment, methods of intervention and models of care and drug problems in prisons within the criminal justice system. Where there is an addiction to drugs, most drug users at some time or another come into contact with the criminal justice system. This is how my client got involved with the system. Some drug users spend periods of time in prison as a result of drug-related offending behaviour. There is an alternative to custody and these include fines, community service, probation and bail, which is subject to certain conditions such as participation in drug treatment programmes. My client is subject to certain conditions that he participates in a drug treatment programme. Criminal justice orders can be subject to conditions of residence for the offender. For drug service workers, close liaison with practitioners in the criminal justice field of work is normal practice. Joint care plans are carefully and sensitively devised to help both services work with the drug user in collaborative and constructive ways. Criminal justice practitioners are expected to work with offenders to achieve specific objectives and these are not always compatible with drug service objectives, for example, reducing drug-related offending behaviour rather than getting rid of it altogether (Robertson, 1998, p.389). My client has an addiction to drugs. The psychology of the addict involves behaviour that takes a repetitive form and is associated with increases of anxiety. Some behaviours that take a repetitive form are associated with increases or decreases in anxiety and these are considered compulsive behaviours. These types of behaviours can include drug addiction, gambling and exhibitionism. However there are important distinctions between these types of behaviour and action and true compulsive behaviour. Firstly addictive behaviours involve a pleasure-seeking component, which is not in compulsive behaviours. Secondly, the anxiety involved with the performance of criminal activity is appropriate in light of social sanctions. Obsessive-compulsive patients experience anxiety that is inappropriate to the situation (Oltman, 1995,p11). There are different options of planning and assessing with substance misuse offenders in the criminal justice system. For social workers, assessment is a key task and it will determine whether or not a care plan is needed for the offender of if a management service is needed. The NHS and Community Care Act (1990) provides guidance on procedures for assessment for people who are entitled to community care services. The assessment process includes, the initial referral, the initial assessment and the in-depth assessment. The assessment process should be needs led and not service-led. Community care services are greatly in demand and the screening process is used to determine who needs the treatment the most. Drug agencies undertaking assessment may receive referrals from the criminal justice system or other agencies. Basic referral forms are filled in with the details of the service user, such as factors and the reason for referral. My client has been referred from the criminal justice system to a drug agency for assessment. The initial interview with the service user will determine whether or not they need a more in-depth assessment or a formal care plan. Most local authorities have certain criteria and priority levels to which they can base their response on. The service user is told what is involved in the assessment, is told about confidentiality policies and whether or not there will be any participation of others. The service users are told what to do if they want to use complaint procedures or appeal if they are against any decisions made at or after the assessment. The initial assessment will determine the seriousness of the problem and the level of need required. My client has more complex needs with his addiction problems so he would require a more in-depth formal assessment so that a care plan can be made for him. This assessment will include personal details, family and relationships, social details, significant life events, social supports and networks, comprehensive history of addictions and associated problems. The assessment will also include, treatment history, risk behaviour, criminal history and current offending behaviour, financial status, physical health, mental health problems, past and present, self concepts, perceived needs and the level of motivation to address these needs, personal resources and abilities, resources and abilities of partners and carers, other agency assessments and specialist assessments and the conclusions and suggested interventions of the assessment. Robertson (1998,p.376) suggests that care planning should involved developing a package of care, which will meet the client’s needs. Care plans are systematic approaches and include all the care and treatment that will be provided and the desired outcome. Care plans are monitored measured and reviewed and will involve the client, service provider, an assessor and a care manager. The care plan will involve information gathered at the assessment in an easy to monitor format and will illustrate the behaviours that need to be addressed and it will have separate sections for identifying the needs of the problem. Partnerships between the criminal justice system and the treatment agencies direct substance-misusing offenders to the appropriate services. There are many initiatives aimed at encouraging substance misusers to take part in appropriate treatment that will help them. In the UK there are twelve step agencies that are also know as the ‘Minnesota method of treatment’. These agencies are funded through statutory sources. The aim of these agencies is to treat the dependence on drugs to help reduce drug misuse and to help the client give up drugs completely when they feel ready to do so. Three intermediate aims are to help resolve the underlying problems that contribute to drug misuse, to help the client gain more control and minimize harm also known as harm minimization (Keene, 1997,p.223). The Government produced a drug strategy in 1998 in the UK called, ‘Tackling drugs to build a better Britain.’ This was updated again in 2002. The strategy sets out the range of interventions and policies to help reduce harm caused by using illegal drugs by the year 2008. The drug intervention programme used to be known as the criminal justice interventions programme. The government aims to cut crime related to drug use. This strategy uses the criminal justice system to help direct offenders who used drugs out of crime and into treatment. There are different kinds of interventions used by drug service workers. Psychological interventions are very useful when it comes to help treat someone with a drug addiction. Professional psychotherapy is very effective and good quality drug counselling can also be very effective. Psychological interventions are, cognitive behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, and the twelve-step treatment program that I discussed earlier and relapse prevention. Some people think that complementary and alternative therapies are useful, but there is not enough evidence in the population to back up this claim. The model of care, introduced by the National Treatment agency (NTA), is a framework that is used by Drug Services to ensure that the services provided are consistent and meet the needs of the service user. The framework is categorised by easy to understand tier levels and treatment levels. Tier one, includes primary care by health care professionals and general practitioners that provide medical services along with probation and housing services. Tier two (Open Access Services) offers a range of drop in street agencies that offer advice and support for stimulant users and substance misusers are able to drop in when there is a crisis. Tier three (Community prescribing services) is mostly geared towards opium user. Tier three, (Structured day programmes) are geared into providing education about drug misuse, and provide training for work skills and give advice about practical issues. Tier four, (Residential Care) has different systems in place for entry in different areas for entry in to residential care. The social services community care assessment team usually deal with the funding. Another option for the substance misuse offender is motivation to change. Motivational interviewing is based on using the motivational change model. The model consists of five stages with stage one being the pre-contemplation stage, stage two the contemplation stage, three the action stage, four the maintenance of change and five the relapse stage. Prochaska and DiClemente are two best-known authors on the importance of individual motivation in dependency treatment. The authors developed the motivational change module from their work with smokers. They use a Cognitive behavioural approach method and their interventions are concerned with cognitive and behavioural change (Prochaska and DiClemente, 1983,p.390). The control of drug misuse is a big problem in prisons. People are much more likely to use drugs in prison because of stress, anxiety and boredom. These levels are higher for substance misusers in prison so they would be more likely to take health risks. Drug treatment in prison could be approached the same way, as it is in the community with regimes to reduce drug related harm, rather than prevention. Because of the extent of my client’s addictive behaviour he has had a formal in-depth assessment done so that we can meet his needs. This has resulted in a care plan being made up for so that we can provide services for him and carefully monitor his progress. We have liased with other professional health services and we have had a full mental health assessment done for him. We have considered his past history of using drugs and the amount of offending he has done in the past and the length of time he has been involved in the criminal justice system. We have noticed that he has also had mental health problems in the past and that he suffers from depression. The client did not go into custody this time because of his substance offending behaviour instead he was given a probation order subject to certain conditions that he participate in a drug treatment service. We contacted drug service workers who were happy to help my client as long as he was willing to accept help. My client says that he does want to change his behaviour and put an end to his substance misuse. He has tried in the past to give up but this has always lead to a relapse. After careful consideration and after weighing up all the options of treatment for my client I decided that psychological intervention along with drug therapy was the best way forward to help reduce his drug dependency. I have decided that professional psychotherapy and relapse intervention would be the best option for him because other options have not helped him in the past. We are also going to offer him good quality counselling. My client has told me that spending time in custody has not done him any good. He told me that he gets very depressed when he is inside and this leads to more dependency on drugs. Our goal is to help him stay out of custody and reduce his dependency on drugs. We will continue to monitor, measure and review the clients care plan and see whether or not his dependency and addiction are getting bet ter. As substance service workers our goal is to meets the needs of the service user and in this instance it is to reduce substance addiction and the long term goal is to eradicate substance misuse altogether. In order to intervene effectively where there is addictive behaviour, social workers need to be able to assess and plan appropriate treatment. For my assignment I have chosen a client within the criminal justice system that has an addictive behaviour. He is a drug misuse offender and he has been involved with the criminal justice system for a few years now. I have discussed a bit about the psychology of addictive behaviour and how my client was referred to me through the criminal justice system. I have discussed the methods of assessment and the different options available. I have discussed the most suitable option for my client who I feel has deeper problems to address than some other substance misusers I have encountered. In this instance I felt that my client would benefit from a psychological form of intervention that would include psychotherapy. There are different types of psychotherapy; these are behaviour therapy that helps the client put an end to undesirable habits or certa in fears that they have. Cognitive therapy is a method that tries to show the client that certain thoughts that they are having are not good for them and that they are negative. The therapist will then try to get the client into thinking more positive thoughts in order that the persistence of negative thoughts will eventually fade away. Drug therapy is also called by the name of pharmacotherapy and it is a part of psychotherapy. The approach here with this method of intervention is to calm the person down using certain anti-anxiety drugs so that they permit the other therapies to have effect. The negative side is that sometimes these drugs encourage psychological dependence and the anxiety that was there before might return again. Some addictions such as obsessive – compulsive disorder have been successfully treated using certain antidepressant drugs. The types of interventions I have discussed do not always work for everyone. Social workers need to analyse the situation very carefully and sensitively when working with addictive behaviours. This is because it is a very sensitive area and if treatment goes wrong the client could go back to their old habits of substance misuse and become a part of the drug culture again. The aim is to reduce offending and minimise the number of substance misusers by putting carefully controlled care plans into place to address their needs. The intervention method that was used on my client was very successful and I am happy to say that my client has cured his addictive behaviour. It is important that assessments are done very carefully and to take into consideration all the important facts of the client. It is also important for social workers and other drug service workers to gain the trust of the client because without this there is less change of the client willing to accept treatment. Every year in January, protestors line the streets of Washington D.C. with signs that boldly exclaim, â€Å"Abortion is Murder†, â€Å"Right to Life†, and â€Å"Pro-Life.† The March for Life protest attracts approximately one quarter of a million people from across the country annually to demonstrate their disdain for abortion. Ever since the Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade in 1973, Americans and lawmakers alike remain in constant dispute over the moral and legal issues of early pregnancy termination. Those opposed to abortion strongly believe that abortion negates the "Right to Life," and they consider it as morally reprehensible. On the other hand, pro-choice supporters debate that such statements merely embody religious beliefs and values. Pro-abortionists argue that the right to an abortion lies solely with the pregnant woman. Regardless of the endless tirades and diatribes from pro-choice defenders and their attempts to justify early pregnancy termination, I find abortion to be constitutionally illegal, immoral, and downright disgusting as many alternatives to the matter exist. The Constitution of the United States of America holds a logical case for life. Part one of Sutherland and Cressey’s differential association theory explains that criminal behavior is learned. Applying this to Nate and Sam involves explicating their childhood and how they were raised. From a young age both Nate and Sam were conditioned by their father, Big Willie to be aggressive, and that in life you have to take what you want (take home outline). Nate and Sam’s father unknowingly conditioned them in a harsh way that made them susceptible to becoming date rapists. As a result of their aggressive upbringing Nate and Sam must succeed in their group of guy friends, the â€Å"Mac Daddies,† at any cost. Part three of the differential association theory states, the principal part of the learning of criminal behavior occurs within intimate personal groups. Nate and Sam’s criminal behavior was learned in the home. Their father’s philosophy in life of you have to take what you want in life contributed to his children’s deviant identities. Nate and Sam act how they were taught. The motto of the â€Å"Mac Daddies,† â€Å"no rules, just sex,† also influences the boy’s behavior. This motto is significant in how Nate and Sam deal with women. They are going to take what they want using an aggressive style of behavior, because that is what they were taught. Part four of the differential association theory states, when criminal behavior is learned, the learned includes (a) techniques of committing the crime, which are sometimes very complicated, sometimes very simple; (b) the specific direction of motive, drives, rationalizations, and attitudes. Nate and Sam learned to be aggressive and take what you want in life from their father. In order to stay in competition for â€Å"Mac Master† they had to use these techniques. Their competitive background resulted in them becoming date rapists to increase their point totals in their sexual competition. A person becomes delinquent because of an excess of definitions favorable to violation of law over definitions unfavorable to violation of law. Since the boy’s were raised in an environment that taught aggressive behavior without limits as to what one can achieve, the boys, used this behavior in a negative way and became date rapists. The manner in which the boys were raised was negat ive; therefore, criminal behavior was enforced as opposed to neutral or positive behavior. Today we are using animals for a new kind of survival, we are using them for testing and experimenting medicines that we need for different diseases. All along this time, this experiments has helped a lot for discovering of new kind of diseases and medicine to cure them. I think that stopping of this experiments will bring limitation in scientific progress. However there are o lots of organization that try to protect animal rights but anyway for the moment is the only what that we have to test and experiment new way curing new or existing deceases. Although that many organization of animal rights think that animals should not used in medical research data shows that there are a lots of medications that we use today are invented due to animal research, because there are some animals who have similar body functions with humans. Reducing the human suffering as much as we can must be our firs priority, and then our second priority must be reducing of animal suffering or death. Is not the same as using humans and animals in medical research for discovering new diseases that my affect both animals and human beings, in this case we must use animals for research so we avoid human suffering as much as we can and after that our priority should be animals. For death bringers deceases like HIV or different tumors we need to do experimenting and tests with animals because it is the mos efficient way to find new ways to cure without having human suffering. Regarding to the second part that says that we must do our best to have the minimum of animal suffering has to a lot with ethics of the scientists that are doing this experiments. Regarding a survey conducted in the American Medical Association show that 99% of all active physicians in the U. S think that animal testing is the only way yo medical advancements. With today technology we can keep animal suffering in the absolute minimum. We can use anesthetics to minimize the suffering. Also to reduce animal suffering can be done by keeping them comfortable and in clean and healthy environment conditions. In other words is clearly possible to use animals in research without being cruel to them. New technologies of scanning that exist today like magnetic resonance, which make possible for doctors to learn about a certain disease from animals without making them suffer. According to studies there are thousands of death bringers diseases that are discovered from 1600's to 1990's due to animal experimentation. According to Animal Use and Abuse Statistics, more than 25 million vertebrate animals are used annually, and the number of invertebrates may extend to billions in United States. Above the scientific ethics of the scientist is the technology that is available to him, so our part is to do our best to avoid not needed hurting or testing. So we must take our benefits from this experiments but also to protect this animals from death. According to the US based, Foundation for Biomedical Research: â€Å"Animal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century – for both human and veterinary health. From antibiotics to blood transfusions, from dialysis to organ transplantation, from vaccinations to chemotherapy, bypass surgery and joint replacement, practically every present-day protocol for the prevention, treatment, cure and control of disease, pain and suffering is based on knowledge attained through research with lab animals. Humans genes are 99% like chimpanzees, and many other basic functions like eating, seeing, smelling are in humans like in animals. As a result of this similarity , the feedback of these animals are a very good guide to possible reactions of human patients. It is very possible that humans and animals can get o lot of the same diseases, because of this we can make the research in animals and test new medicines in them firs and after this we can produce for humans. As we know from the theory of evolution animals feel pain and pleasure,because we share with them our emotions. So the people using animals for experimenting or different purposes should treat them with respect. Also the purposes for witch they are used should be legitimate. The groups defending animals have tried to distort the truth about what animals are used for. They refuse the fact that these researchers are important and declaim that animals shouldn’t be used for any reason. They argue that medical community doesn’t support the fact that animals are used in research and it is obvious that it isn’t the truth. Besides the modern technology used in animal testing not all the experiments finish successfully and millions of animals die each year. Another point is that there are a lots of medicines that are tested in animals but they have side-effects in humans. So this kind of experiments bring suffering and deaths in both sides, in animals and in humans. Because different species reaction differently on different medicines. Animal rights organization have tried to dis inform public about the different fact in animal research. They do not accept the fact that use of animal in research has given a very useful contribution in curing different diseases. Today about 95% of U. S medical schools do not use animals to experiment new medicines or for testing purposes. They are trained using the human stimulation that the today technologies can offer and doing didactic work. While there are trying to find other ways to animal testing and experimenting, what the best scientist can do for now is try to reduce the number of animals being tested. They are using modern technologies and new types of scanning to see the animal organism so they don’t actually need to apply surgery. Though it is hard to completely stop the animal resting, what we can to is prevent unnecessary tests by stopping certain products that don't require animal experimenting. In order that the pathogenesis of different diseases could be studied,doctors need animal experimentation as the only way at te current level of knowledge ,and it undertakes drug trials,vaccines to alleviate suffering for human and animals. Why are some parts of China so rich while other parts are so poor?

In China there are so many places where most people are sleeping in poverty, living on streets and begging for money everyday. But so many people were rich as well, the extremes from rich to poor are in the same country. The main reason for the different economy in China is that the country is communist, under the control of Jiang Zemin. Communist means that the country runs by paying each person the same wages even if they are a more authority over people and are higher up the hierarchy. Some families were also very poor because they would have a lot of children, which they could not afford to bring up. There is a lot of poverty in rural areas, whilst many people in cities are getting richer. In China there are around 1. 28 billion people, there are about 14 million unemployed people in urban areas and there are about 120 million in rural areas. This means that something must be wrong about China and why so many people can not get jobs. It is wrong to say that the main cause of the situation of people being so much rich in some areas than in others go back only to 1976. Things like the incident at Tiananmen Square in 1989 where thousands of innocent people died and got mowed down by machine guns. Through this many people were on a hunger strike where many people starved and so people got ill and couldn't afford medicine and poverty was the inevitable which was the cause of Deng. In China when Mao was emperor he had many ideas and most of them failed or did not help him get out any competition. Some of his ideas were ‘The great leap forward' and ‘100 hundred flowers campaign. ‘ In ‘the great leap forward' Mao told the peasants to make steel to make their industry more successful. But this failed because the steel was weak and the crops had been forgotten about and the dry weather made the country have a famine. The ‘100 hundred flowers campaign' in 1957 was meant to let the peasants have a say in the government and new ideas, Mao said ‘Let a hundred flowers bloom' which was meant to let new ideas bloom. But this didn't happen, all that happen was that Mao new who his rivals were put in jail and the campaign ended. After this people where even more afraid of speaking out against Mao, which meant they could not improve their lives. When China was under control of the Emperors there were people called the Mandarins who were the Emperor's local officers that taxed and tortured people. At this time 80% of people were peasants and they worked very hard and tried to grow rice or millet. Population growth was a problem because in 1750 there were 100 million people and at the end of the 19th century there were 400 million people. This obviously made families poor and not enough food for everyone, which means that poverty and famine became a problem. By 1962, however, Mao began an offensive to purify the party, having grown increasingly uneasy about what he believed were the creeping â€Å"capitalist† and antisocialist tendencies in the country. As a hardened veteran revolutionary who had overcome the severest adversities, Mao continued to believe that the material incentives that had been restored to the peasants and others were corrupting the masses and were counter revolutionary. To arrest the so-called capitalist trend, Mao launched the Socialist Education Movement, in which the primary emphasis was on restoring ideological purity, rein fusing revolutionary further into the party and government bureaucracies, and intensifying class struggle. The Cultural Revolution saw rapid industrial growth mainly because unlike the rural sector after the Great Leap Forward, the urban sector still concentrated upon heavy industries. The Cultural Revolution did have an adverse impact on China's foreign trade however, as trade was attacked as humiliating to China and as worshipping things foreign. Throughout the period of the Cultural Revolution, China in effect cut off from the rest of the world. However, it still conducted trade relations with other countries it did not recognise, but only on a limited scale and with very little growth. Until 1976, three key elements were central to Mao's economic policy, these were the collectivisation of land, centralised control over the accumulation and reinvestment of capital, and state ownership of major industries and banks and entailing strict limitations on foreign capital and external economic factors. Land reform was the first step in the collectivisation of rural areas. However, the redistribution of land away from the landlords and rich peasants to smaller private holdings was not as successful as Mao initially hoped. Private farms were not a part of Socialist policy, and new divisions, exploitation and uneven land ownership showed signs of re-emerging. During the 1950s, therefore, collectives were established that enabled Mao to control the means of production even further, and were given quotas to supply the state with a portion of their output at pre-determined prices and also acted as pools of labour that could construct irrigation networks, roads and railway tracks. Collectives also enabled the generation of a gross operating surplus that paid for education and health services. Mao felt that industrialisation was still too slow and in a bid to quicken its pace, collectives were further organised into ‘people's communes' under the guise of the ‘great leap forward' in 1958. Peasants were directed to build roads, dams and other projects relating to improving China's infrastructure. Millions of ‘backyard furnaces' appeared, producing mainly low quality pig iron and steel of little use for anything. Cotton was also planted throughout China – at the expense of staple crops – but had little success because of wide climatic variations. This futility came at the expense of agriculture, and resulted in widespread famines and illness. As for the industrial sector, large-scale industrial enterprises were allowed to operate independently from the state for a short period of time after liberation. But from the early 1950s on, the nationalisation of industries commenced China made a rule that every couple could only have one child and this helped the amount of people and helped families with money. One of the short term problems with Deng's one child policy is the lack of girls. Due to population growth in China, Deng thought up a one child policy, this meant that couples are only allowed to have one child between them. Deng made a graph of the population growth for each family if they had 1, 2 3 or four children. The graph concluded that for China to have plenty of food and wealth families were only allowed to have one child. Families then chose to have baby boys and not girls, reason for this is mainly long term. Boys have been favoured over girls for most of China's history, so when only one child was allowed per family boys were an obvious choice. But people can't choose what the sex of their child will be, so why are there so many boys? Is there a drug that stops women from having girls, no the reason is much more sinister. If a baby girl is born they are thrown in with the rubbish or left somewhere to die! This is very brutal but it happens all over China. If a women has two children then there is great punishment, even when she is pregnant, they are forced to have an abortion, then they are sterilized and imprisoned. The harsh punishments given is enough to put anyone off having a second child. In 1974 the article in the ‘People's Daily' it tries to encourage modern attitudes â€Å"There is still the attitude that ‘women go home to cook meals, feed the pigs and shut up chickens, while men go home to smoke their pipes and wait for food and drink. ‘ Some even laugh at those males comrades who help their wives with the housework. † When the Chinese people had more than one child it would usually cause money problems because people didn't have enough money, so this made families poor and so they could not help themselves. With the population getting greater and greater more and more people with no money which made the divide between rich and poor bigger. I think the reason for China being so different in economy is that the country had been so communist for many years that some people did not have good enough paid jobs and with so many children it was hard to pay for everything. The way that so many people did not have work and that China as a country did badly in exporting and importing, this made people have bad pay and long hours. This situation did not just go back from 1976 because of events like in Tiananmen Square. Deng Xioping is not to blame for the problem of poverty because he tried to help the workers by motivating them, but was just discredited by Mao. I think that that the most important person that helped create this problem was Mao because of his ideas and plans that went wrong and that when people tried to speak out and make a point across to him he just put them in jail and murdered them, so the Chinese people could not help themselves from him.

William Shakespeare, perhaps the most extraordinary writer who ever lived, includes some magnificent philosophical truths in his work. Brilliantly constructed, his world-renowned play, Hamlet, demonstrates his excellence. When reading it, I felt privileged to read such beautifully written language, and choosing my favorite quote was difficult. In the beginning of the play, Laertes prepares to go to France. Naturally, his father Polonius gives him some special words of advice before he leaves, â€Å"[t]his above all: to thine own self be true, / And it must follow, as night the day/ Thou canst not then be false to any man† (I.ii.84-86). If Laertes is honest with himself his father believes he won’t misrepresent himself to others, and he will be a true gentleman. Not only is this quote pleasurable reading, it is entirely truthful. Lying and cheating are two violations of this truth that I’ve witnessed frequently. For example, English has always been one of my weaker subjects because I’m not a very efficient reader. Even so, I study hard for my tests and often get a decent result. However, several others, whose English skills are also relatively weak, choose to cheat, there by obtaining a grade equal to or higher than my own. I could easily do this as well—leaving more time to sleep and devote to soccer—but not while being true to myself. After studying intently for a test and getting the result I deserve, I’m completely satisfied, with the grade and myself. This is what’s important according to Shakespeare: to be able to look into the mirror and be proud of the face looking back.

Definition of terms Bamboo shoots- There are several kinds of bamboo shoots available in the West-all in cans only, which is a pity since they lose much of their crispy texture and flavor. Try to obtain Winter bamboo shoots; they are dug up from the cracked earth before the shoots grow to any great length or size, therefore they are extra tender and tasty. Spring bamboo shoots are much larger; they sometimes may reach several feet in length and 3-4 in (7. 5-10cm) in diameter. Once the can is opened, the shoots may be kept in a covered jar of water in the refrigerator for several days. Braised bamboo shoots in cans should be eaten cold without any further cooking. Bean-curd (tofu)- Made from soaked yellow soy beans ground with water. A coagulant is added after some of the water is strained through muslin cloth, causing the ground beans to curdle and become firm bean-curd. Usually sold in squares about 21/2 X 21/2 in (6X6cm), ? in (2cm) thick. Will keep a few days if submerged in water in a container and placed in the coldest part of refrigerator. Dried bean-curd skin is usually sold either in thick sticks or thin sheets. It should be soaked in cold water overnight or in warm water for at least an hour before use. Bean sauce- Sometimes called ‘Crushed bean sauce’, this thick sauce is made from black or yellow beans, flour and salt. It is sold in tins and, once opened, must be transferred into a screw-top jar and then it will keep in a refrigerator for months. (N. B. Black bean sauce is very salty, while yellow bean sauce is sweeter with sugar added. ) Bean sprouts- Two kinds are available: yellow soy bean sprouts, only to be found in Chinese provision stores, and green mung bean sprouts, which can be bought from almost every large city supermarket. (Never use canned bean sprouts; they do not have the crunchy texture which is the main characteristics of bean sprouts. ) They can be kept in the refrigerator for two or three days if bought fresh. Cellophane or transparent noodles- Made from mung beans. They are sold in dried form, tied into bundles weighing from 2 oz (50g) to 1lb (0. 5kg). Soak in warm water for five minutes before use. Chili paste- Also called ‘Chili puree’. It made of chili, soy bean, salt, sugar and flour. Sold in jars and will keep almost indefinitely. Chili sauce-Hot, red sauce made from chilis, vinegar, plums, salt and sesame. Chinese cabbage- There are innumerable varieties of cabbage grown in China, of which only two or three types are available in the West. The one most commonly seen is known as celery cabbage or Chinese leaves (Brassica pekinensis), it has a pale green color and tightly wrapped elongated head, two-thirds of the vegetable is stem which has a crunchy texture; another variety has a shorter and fatter head with curlier, pale yellow leaves. Then there is the dark green-leaved variety, also with white stems (Brassica chinensis); and the bright green-leaved variety with pale green stems, sometimes with a sprig of yellow flower in the center (Brassica parachinensis) which is very much prized by the Chinese. These last two varieties are sold only in Chinese stores. Chinese dried mushrooms- There are two main types of Chinese mushrooms: those that grow on trees, known as Fragrant or Winter Mushrooms (Lentinus edodes); and those cultivated on a bed of straw, known as Straw Mushrooms (Volvariella volvacea). Fragrant of Winter Mushrooms are sold dried; they are used in many dishes as a complementary vegetable for their flavor and aroma. Soak in warm water for 20-30 minutes, squeeze dry and discard the hard stalks before use. Straw Mushrooms are available in cans, they are completely different in texture and flavor. The western varieties of common or field mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus or Psalliota campestris) can be used as substitutes. Five-spice powder- A mixture of anise seed, fennel, cloves, cinnamon and pepper. It is very strongly piquant, so use a very small amount each time. It will keep for years if stored in a tightly covered container. Fresh coriander- Sometimes known as Chinese parsley, this plant is available in oriental stores or in Italian grocers where it is called cilantro. Ginger- The roots of the ginger plant, or zingiber officinal to use its scientific name, are an indispensable ingredient in both Chinese and Indian cuisine. Thought to have originated in South-east Asia, the plant’s name, †zingiber† means horn-shaped, after the irregular shapes on the rhizomes or roots. Valued for its clean, sharp flavor, ginger is used in soups, stir-fries, and marinades. It is especially good with seafood, as it can cover up strong fish odors. Green hot chili- Will keep fresh for a week or two in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator in a plastic bag. Green seaweed- This mosslike seaweed is dark green in color. It is sold dried, in wads or n matted chips. When deep-fried in oil, it is crisp and has a toasted fragrance. Dried green cabbage leaves can be used as a substitute. Hoi Sin Sauce- Also known as barbeque sauce. Made from soy beans, sugar, flour, vinegar, salt, garlic, chili and sesame. Kao Liang Liqueur- A spirit made from sorghum and millet. Brandy or vodka can be substituted. Oyster sauce: A thick sauce made from oysters and soy sauce. Sold in bootle, it will keep in the refrigerator indefinitely. Red bean curd sauce- A thick sauce made from fermented bean curd and salt. Sold in cans or jars, will keep indefinitely. Rice- Rice is main part of the dish because rice is used to serve the main dish because use it to accent most of the food. Rice wine- Also known as Shaoxing wine, made from glutinous rice. Sake or pale (medium or dry) sherry can be substituted. Salted black beans- Whole bean sauce, very salty. Scallions- Also known as spring onions. Sesame seed oil- Sold in bottles. Widely, used in China as a garnish rather than for cooking. The refined yellow sesame oil sold in Middle Eastern stores has fewer flavors and therefore is not a very satisfactory substitute. A few words must be said here regarding the types of oil used in Chinese cooking. The most commonly used in China are vegetable oils such as soy bean, peanut or rape seed oils. The Chinese never use butter or meat dripping, although lard and chicken fat are used in some in some regional cooking, notably in the Eastern School. Sichuan preserved vegetable- This is a specialty of Sichuan province. It is the root of a special variety of the mustard green pickled in salt and hot chili. Sold in cans. Once opened it can be stored in a tightly sealed jar in the refrigerator for months. Sichuan peppercorns- Reddish-brown peppercorns, much stronger than either black or white peppercorns of the West. Usually sold in plastic bags. Will keep indefinitely in a tightly sealed container. Soy sauce- Invented by the Chinese approximately 3,000 years ago, soy sauce is made from fermented soybeans, wheat flour, water, and salt. The two main types of soy sauce are light and dark. As the name implies, light soy sauce is lighter in color, and also sweeter than dark soy sauce. In Chinese cooking, it is used more often than dark soy-always use light soy in a recipe unless dark is especially called for. Aged for a longer period of time, dark soy sauce is thicker and blacker in color. It is also less salty than light soy. It is used in certain recipes to add color, and as a dipping sauce. Tiger lily or golden needles- the buds of a special type of lily. Solid in dried form, should be soaked in warm water for 10-20 minutes and the hard seems removed. They are often used in combination with wooden ears. Tomato sauce- quite different from western tomato ketchup. Italian tomato paste may be substituted when fresh tomatoes are not available. Water chestnuts- strictly speaking, water chestnuts do not belong to the chestnut family; they are the roots of a vegetable. Also known as Horse’s hoof in China on account of their appearance before the skin is peeled off. They are available fresh or in cans. Canned water chestnuts retain only part of the texture, and even less of the flavor of fresh ones. Will keep for about a month in a refrigerator in a covered jar. Water chestnut powder- the flour made from water chestnuts. Cornstarch is a good substitute. Wooden ears- also known as Clod Ears, they are dried tree fungus. Sold in dried form, should be soaked in warm water for 20 minutes; discard any hard stems and rinse in fresh water before use. They have a crunchy texture and a mild but subtle flavor. According to the Chinese, wooden ears contain protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron and carbohydrates, and one particular brand from Hubei province claims on the packet that is ‘possesses such effect as cleaning gastro enteric organs in human body’ Chopsticks- Chinese simply choose chopstick as their tableware rather than knife and fork since Chinese people, under cultivation of Confucianism, consider knife and fork bearing sort of violence, like cold weapons. However chopsticks reflect gentleness and benevolence, the main moral teaching of Confucianism. Chinese food seems to taste better eaten with chopsticks which are the special utensils Chinese use to dine. It will be an awkward experience for foreigners to use chopsticks to have meal. Chapter V FINANCIAL ASPECTS Capital Requirements The following methods are used to analyze the capital budgeting: A) Payback Period The payback period will provide the number of years required to return the original investment. B) Employees’ uniform is estimated to be P250 a dress. Two dresses will be given to 30 personnel. The expense will increase at the rate of 10% annually. C) Rental expense is placed as P360, 000 annually with an annual increase of 10%. D) Parking lot rental expense is placed as P2, 000 per month with a yearly increase of 10%. E) License fee is about P500 a year; a yearly increase of 10% is assumed. F) Advertising and sales promotions are estimated to be P43, 000 per annum with an annual increase of 10%. several financial ratios were computed to test the projects viability and resources utilization to determine how profitable the project is. Tables F-1 to table F-3 contains selected liquidity and profitability ratios for the proposed restaurant. Chapter VI POTENTIAL PROBLEM Risk is inherent in business. A feasibility study simply may reduce the incidence of failure. The following problems may arise in the future. Unexpected competition If this venture proves profitable, other investors would be motivated to engage in this business. This will give rise to competition. In order to maintain the project’s profitability, the management should make the food attractive and ore delicious, and prove that the foods served are sanitary. Quality of food The most important for the restaurant is the quality of food because from where, the restaurant will be known in the public also, the restaurant must maintain the good raw materials, supply the good quality of the food and taste of the food. Pilferage and theft of the food This is one case that will come up inside the ware house or in other sections when they are seldom checked for internal control. This may be done by the employees themselves. It this happens frequently, it will result in big losses. To protect this case, the management should strictly and immediately check from one section to the other. When the restaurant buys new merchandise, the used merchandise should be checked and inspected. Pilferage of china wares by customers This also one of the most common problems of restaurant operations there are some customers who, for one reason or other, steal such things as spoons, forks, caps, saucers, etc. In view of the prevailing costs of these items, losses should be kept to a minimum. What can be done in this regard is to make it the responsibility of the waiters to retrieve all utensils being used by the customers as soon as possible. Besides, they will be given the responsibility of keeping a close look for those people. Breakage of china wares An income instance, breakages occurs due to carelessness of personnel. As china ware very expensive, breakages can result also in substantial losses. As a remedy, personnel will be given training on the proper handling of these items. If however, despite of this precautionary measure there will still be breakages, the guilty party will be required to pay the cost of what he broke. Breakdown of major equipments Breakdown of major equipment like air-conditioning units, freezers, refrigerators and the like could pose a potential problem for the management of the proposed restaurant. In this case, the management must provide maintenance and regular check-up on the service ability of these equipments. Increase in demand In the initial years the demands of restaurant is increasingly slow but the demand is demand is expected to gradually increase this increase in demand will ultimately result in more customers w/c might become a problem if they are not properly hosted. In order to overcome this potential problem, the management of the propose restaurant will give are consideration to the training of employees who should be able to handle any additional burden. Employee problem This is a common problem encountered by this kind of business because it refers to the relationship between employee and owners but the research presents the following solution: 1. Make contract w/ the employees for at least one year work. 2. Threat them like family member 3. Give them better benefits than your competitors. Economic conditions The unstable economical condition always worry the investors because the inflation, depreciating value of pesos and different amendment in and regulation always affect the purchasing power of clients. But since, the market consist of type a,b,c mostly and d, partially, w/c does not suffer much doing inflation as compared to the other business . Change of chief cook Because of the high competition, it may be possible that any new or old competitors will pick the trump card, meaning to say the chief cook because he always plays an important part in every food business. So first, research suggests that special attention should be given to chief cook. But case he leaves, the job again will be to look for a good cook. The other cooks who work w/ chief cook will be given a chance to show their potential and skills, otherwise it will be a drawback for restaurant. Chapter VII SOCIAL DESIRABILITY Businesses are operated to earn profit. In this business we do not only get the profit but think that it will benefit the people or the government. This study was conducted not only to prove the viability of the proposed project but also to develop and prepares feasibility study in the context of development. The thrust of the proposed project will contribute socio-economic benefits to society. 1. Solution of unemployment problem a. The proposed venture is to be operated by 30 workers with an expected increase in sales more workers will have to be recruited there by generating continuous employment that is helpful in reducing the problem of unemployment in the country. b. Employment improves a person’s standard living. 2. Governments revenues due to taxes a. The restaurant will pay taxes to the government so that it will contribute to the government’s source of income. b. The taxes paid by all these restaurants will be great help- in boosting the country economically. The restaurant is one of the vita cogs in the preservation of Philippine economy as it becomes one of weapons against inflation. 3. Convenience of the public a. The proposed project will provide Chinese food to all income groups customers 4. Related industries a. This project will create new market for a domestic supplier of raw material. It will develop a new or help to develop a new service of supply for existing or potential industrial consumers and thus induce new investments along the lines linked to it. For instance, this project can create new market for domestic supplier of raw food stuffs and ingredients required by its process. This is termed as back work â€Å"linkage† effect 5. Closer relationship a. The Chinese restaurant will serve as the bridge that would narrow the gap between the Filipino and Chinese communities. Hence, this will create sufficient awareness regarding restaurant operation Chapter VIII FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS This chapter presents the findings, conclusions and recommendation drawn from the extensive study conducted by the researcher. Findings 1. Organization and Management Aspects The proposed Chinese restaurant shall be implemented through a single proprietorship type of business. This is rather the simplest and easiest type of establish on the part of the proponent. The functional type of structure should be chosen over the other types because the proposed business is only small one and the personnel complement required to make it functional is also small. There should be 30 personnel to be needed to manage the business. This number includes the General Manager down to the Helpers/Busboys/Janitors. Certain factors should be considered in assigning the compensation of every personnel. The compensation should commensurate with the efforts and expected output to be expected from each position. Compensation should commensurate with also the qualifications for each position. The business establishment should comply with all the laws especially those that provide benefits and protection for labor. 2. Marketing Aspects The information gathered from the Market Research, shows that there are concrete indicators of a big market for Chinese restaurants. Some respondents said that they prefer to entertain their visitors in Chinese restaurants. So, even if there are already the same types of business existing in the Navali are, the researcher plans to pursue this kind of business. The demand is very evident among the population of the area and the tourists of different nationalities who are used to frequently visit the restaurants for their lunch needs and for more leisure oriented eating/occasions. The derived figures show that the demand gap is so high and it will be expected to increase along with the increase in population. On the other hand, supply for the competitors will also increase with the increase in occupancy rates but they do not have a plan to expand their venture because of limited space available. The proposed venture will take the market share in the first year. To boost the sale of a restaurant different marketing strategies should be adopted including distinctive atmosphere, the traditional food will be provided to their guest. Quality of food and services, variety of food and sound promotional policies will be adopted before and during the operating stage. 3. Production/Technical Aspects The proposed Chinese Restaurant will be located at Navali Laguna with the propose name Kimchi-ai. This area is busy area center of business with numerous office, jewelry store, hotels, bank branches, and a first run movie house. The location at China town also attracts many visitors and tourist. The total area of the restaurant comprises 201 square meters. It has a total sitting capacity of 96 people. Operational process starts with the procurement, receiving and storing of food.
